The calendar matters less than the sea on a particular day. Use these notes to plan swimming, island trips and walks from southern Phuket, then check current conditions before setting out.
Best odds for sea days
Plan island trips first, then fill in the land days
From November to April, the Andaman side usually has calmer water and more predictable boat schedules. It is also the busier period, so flexibility still pays.
Ya Nui and Nai Harn
Usually the better months for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling. Wind, current and beach flags still override the season.
Similan and Surin Islands
The marine parks normally operate during their open season. Reserve early, but confirm the official park status before paying a reseller.
Black Rock and Laem Krating
Dry ground makes the rocky and grassy sections more manageable. Start early and plan to be back before darkness.
One useful trade-off
Popular sunset viewpoints and tiny Ya Nui fill quickly. Go earlier in the day, then use the evening for Rawai or Nai Harn.
Read the sea, not only the weather app
Rain is not the main limitation — swell and access are
The southwest monsoon does not mean rain all day. The practical difference is a more changeable sea, route cancellations and trails that can become slippery after a short downpour.
Red flags are a decision, not a suggestion
Phuket authorities identify May–October as the rougher period at Nai Harn. If red flags are flying, do not enter even when the beach looks calm.
Some islands are genuinely unavailable
Similan and Surin normally close around mid-May to mid-October for monsoon safety and ecosystem recovery. Dates can change each year.
Phi Phi: the ferry is not the island tour
Regular ferries from Rassada Pier near Phuket Town to Tonsai on Phi Phi can still run in green season. A speedboat tour to Maya Bay or Bamboo Island depends more heavily on swell and park decisions, so Bamboo may be dropped even when the ferry is operating. Maya Bay also has a recurring August–September conservation closure; confirm the current dates and itinerary the day before.
Walk after inspection, not after assumption
Black Rock and Laem Krating can be muddy, overgrown and hard to follow after rain. Choose a road-access viewpoint when the ground is wet.

Trail access around the southern headlands is less formal than in a European national park. Download the route, carry water, wear grippy shoes and turn back before the light goes.
